Nevalor Studio — User Guide

THE PREMISE
A free writing space for writers to create, organise and refine novels, short stories, poetry, essays and other literary projects in one focused place.

A free writing space for writers

Nevalor Studio is a free writing and development environment provided by Nevalor Publishers for writers who want a quiet place to develop their literary work. It is designed for novels, short stories, poetry, essays and other literary projects. You can create projects, organise chapters, write and revise your manuscript, keep earlier revisions, search and replace text, check manuscript statistics, and use a collection of writing tools — all within your browser.

Nevalor Studio is intended to make the writing process easier while keeping the focus on the work itself.

Why Nevalor Studio?

Writing a substantial literary work requires more than simply opening a blank document.

A novel may involve dozens of chapters, repeated revisions, changes to characters and scenes, ideas that develop over time, and passages that need to be revisited. Nevalor Studio brings these basic writing needs together in one focused space.

The aim is simple: “Open the Studio, create your project, and write.”

There is no complicated setup and no need to install special software.

Getting Started

1. Create a Project

From the Projects page, click New Project.

Choose:

  • Project Title
  • Project Type

Available types include:

  • Novel
  • Short Story
  • Essay
  • Other

Your project is then added to your Studio workspace.

2. Open Your Project

Click Open Project beside a project to enter its manuscript workspace. Inside the project you can:

  • create chapters
  • rename chapters
  • rearrange chapters
  • delete chapters
  • write and revise your manuscript
  • move between chapters
  • view manuscript statistics
  • search and replace text
  • use writing tools
  • review earlier revisions

Writing Your Manuscript

Select a chapter from the chapter list and begin writing. The writing area is designed to remain simple so that the manuscript stays at the centre of the screen. Your work is saved automatically while you write. You can also use Save whenever you want to create a deliberate saved revision.

The editor toolbar remains available while you scroll through a long manuscript. The Format, Tools, Revision History, Export and Save controls stay accessible, so you do not need to return to the top of the manuscript to use them.

At the bottom of the writing area, Studio displays the current word and character counts. When you have scrolled down, Back to top appears beside these counts and takes you smoothly back to the beginning of the writing area.

Formatting Your Manuscript

Studio includes simple literary formatting controls in the Format menu. These controls let you apply common manuscript formatting while you write.

Paragraphs, Headings and Quotations

You can format selected text as a paragraph, heading or quotation, as well as apply italic and underline formatting. Alignment controls are also available when needed.

Adding a Scene Break

When a story moves from one scene to another, use Format → Scene Break rather than inserting several empty paragraphs. Studio inserts a dedicated scene-break marker displayed as:

* * *

The scene break is stored separately from ordinary paragraph spacing, which allows the PDF formatter to recognise and format it consistently. A normal empty line can still be used when you simply want additional spacing.

Organising Chapters

Each manuscript can be divided into chapters.

Add a Chapter

Create a new chapter whenever your manuscript requires one.

Rename a Chapter

Give the chapter an appropriate title.

Reorder Chapters

Move chapters into the correct sequence as your manuscript develops.

Delete a Chapter

Remove a chapter that is no longer required.

This makes it possible to reorganise a manuscript as it develops rather than having to decide its final structure at the beginning.

Revision History

Writing often involves going back to an earlier version. Revision History allows you to keep earlier saved versions of your chapters. Studio records revisions when important writing actions occur rather than creating a new version for every keystroke.

You can:

  • open Revision History
  • examine previous versions
  • view an earlier version
  • restore an earlier version

Before an older version is restored, your current text is preserved so that you do not simply lose the work you had on screen.

Search & Replace

The Search & Replace tool is useful when you need to find a word, phrase or name throughout your manuscript.

You can search:

  • the current chapter
  • the entire project

You can also choose whether the search should be case-sensitive.

The tool allows you to:

  • Find All
  • Replace One
  • Replace All

This is particularly useful when changing character names, correcting repeated spelling errors, or making a consistent terminology change throughout a manuscript.

Writing Tools

The Writing Tools panel provides several small tools designed to make everyday writing easier. These include:

  • Find Next
  • Find Previous
  • Go to Beginning
  • Go to End
  • Centre Cursor
  • Insert Date & Time
  • Go to Chapter
  • Undo
  • Redo
  • Scene break

There is also a Writing Session Target that can be used when you want to set yourself a writing target for a session. These tools are intended to support writing without turning Studio into a complicated productivity system.

Focus Mode

When you want fewer distractions, use Focus Mode. Focus Mode gives the writing area more room and removes unnecessary elements from view. You can return to the normal Studio view when you have finished. This is especially useful when working on a long scene, chapter or passage and you want to concentrate on the manuscript rather than the surrounding interface.

Manuscript Statistics

The Statistics feature provides a quick overview of your project. It can show:

  • Total words
  • Total characters
  • Number of chapters
  • Average words per chapter
  • Longest chapter
  • Shortest chapter
  • Estimated reading time
  • Blank chapters

Statistics can be useful for tracking the development of a manuscript without requiring you to calculate these figures yourself.

Exporting Your Manuscript

Your manuscript can be exported as a TXT file. From the Projects page, click Export TXT beside the relevant project. The exported file contains your chapters in their current order.

You can then:

  • keep a copy on your computer
  • send the manuscript to someone
  • open it in another writing application
  • use it when submitting your work for consideration

Exporting a PDF Manuscript

Studio can prepare your manuscript as a professionally formatted PDF. From the project workspace, click Export and choose the PDF manuscript option.

The PDF export window provides a manuscript preview and allows you to set the author name and choose a book size.

Available book sizes include:

  • 6 × 9 in
  • 5.5 × 8.5 in
  • 5.25 × 8 in
  • 5 × 8 in
  • A5

Studio prepares the manuscript as individual book pages, including the title page, chapter openings, paragraph formatting, page numbers and scene breaks. The preview shows the same book layout prepared for printing.

Automatic Hyphenation

PDF body text uses automatic hyphenation with English (UK) language rules. This allows suitable words to break at line endings when necessary, helping justified paragraphs maintain a cleaner page layout.

Hyphenation is applied during PDF page preparation as well as the final print layout, so the page preview and downloaded PDF use the same pagination. Titles, chapter headings, quotations and scene breaks are not hyphenated.

Downloading the PDF

Review the page preview and, when the manuscript is ready, click Download PDF. Studio opens the print-ready document so you can choose your browser’s PDF printing or saving option. For best results, save your latest work before exporting.

Backing Up Your Project

Studio also provides a Backup JSON option. A backup contains your project information and saved revision history. It can be kept as a personal backup of your Studio project. If necessary, the backup can later be imported into Studio.

It is good practice to keep your own backup copies of important manuscripts.

Renaming a Project

If you decide that your project needs a different title, click Rename beside the project. Enter the new title and save it. Renaming a project does not remove its chapters or manuscript content.

Submitting a Manuscript to Nevalor Publishers

When you are ready to submit your work for publishing consideration, click Submit for Publishing. Studio will display the submission guidelines. The actual submission is handled by you. You will be instructed to:

  1. Make sure your manuscript is complete and carefully revised.
  2. Export the manuscript using Export TXT.
  3. Save the exported file.
  4. Open your normal email application or webmail service.
  5. Address the email to info@nevalorpublishers.com.
  6. Use a clear subject containing the manuscript title.
  7. Attach your manuscript.
  8. Include the requested author and manuscript information.
  9. Send the email.

A suggested message is provided in the submission guidelines for your convenience.

Nevalor Studio does not automatically send your manuscript or email on your behalf.

Your Manuscript and Your Browser

Nevalor Studio currently stores your manuscript in your browser rather than on Nevalor Publishers’ website. This means your projects are kept on your own device and browser profile. For this reason:

  • another person using a different computer will not automatically see your projects
  • opening Studio on another device will not automatically bring your projects with you
  • clearing browser data can affect locally stored Studio data
  • keeping backup copies of important work is strongly recommended

This local approach also means that your manuscript is not being stored as part of Nevalor Publishers’ website hosting simply because you use Studio.

A Free Service for Writers

Nevalor Studio is provided as a free writing space by Nevalor Publishers. Its purpose is not to replace every writing application or become a general-purpose productivity platform. It exists to give writers a practical place to develop literary work before publication. You can use it for a first draft, a major revision, a developing novel, a collection of stories, poetry, essays or another literary project.

Write freely. Revise carefully. Keep your work organised.

Important: Keep Your Own Backups

Because Studio currently keeps manuscript data locally in your browser, writers should maintain their own backups of important work. For an important manuscript, we recommend periodically using:

Backup JSON — for preserving the Studio project and revision history.

and/or

Export TXT — for keeping a readable copy of the manuscript itself.

This is an important part of responsible manuscript management.
